Restoring the Rule of Law
A Symposium on the Future of the United States Department of Justice
On behalf of Georgia Lawyers for the Rule of Law, thank you for joining us for Friday’s symposium, Restoring the Rule of Law: A Symposium on the Future of the United States Department of Justice at the State Bar of Georgia, presented in collaboration with the Mercer Center for Legal Ethics & Professionalism and the Mercer Law Review.
We are especially grateful to our distinguished speakers, moderators, and panelists, including Sally Yates, Rod Rosenstein, Jill Steinberg, Benjamin Grimes, Joseph Tirrell, Bradley Weinsheimer, Patrick Longan, Christine Berger, Jody Hunt, Karen Kelly, James Fleissner, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe, Mary McCord, Walter Jospin, and Seth Kirschenbaum.
Drawing on decades of distinguished public service, DOJ leadership, and legal scholarship, our panelists brought an extraordinary depth of experience and insight into the discussion. The Department of Justice faces enormous challenges. About 4300 lawyers have left the agency. The panelists grappled with the task of identifying what it will take to restore its integrity, rebuild its Divisions, strengthen its core function of commitment to the rule of law, and rebuild public trust in the institution.
From examining the erosion of the DOJ’s traditional norms and ethical responsibilities to exploring prosecutorial discretion, partisan political interference, and institutional reform, the symposium underscored the urgency and immensity of these challenges.
