Partisan Judges Are Inconsistent with Basic Fairness – Both in the Olympics and Our Courts
Remember how Russian judges have long outraged Olympic fans for ruling in favor of “their side” in so many competitions? At the 2014 Sochi Olympic figure skating competition, most observers believed reigning champion Yuna Kim of South Korea had prevailed. Yet two Russian judges caused Russian figure skater Adelina Sotnikova to win gold by awarding her the highest scores of her career. The Russian skated off the ice into the arms of one of the Russian judges–for a hug.
The Trump administration’s recent firing of more than 100 immigration judges suggests it wants the equivalent of only “Russian judges” on our immigration courts—judges who always take the administration’s side. In our American system of justice, that is no “judge” at all.
